Tom, 25, from Penzance in Cornwall, is a second year Agricultural Engineering student and recipient of the Douglas Bomford Trust Scholarship.

“I chose the agricultural engineering course at Harper Adams as I enjoy learning how machinery works and how it is implemented to solve problems and aid with tasks on the farm. My aim is to be involved with the progression and modernisation of farm equipment and practices to help improve the productivity and sustainability of farming.

“I have worked on various farms around the country to further develop my knowledge of farming and the problems facing various sectors across the industry. These sectors include Arable, Dairy, Beef, Sheep, Poultry, Vegetable and Flower growing enterprises, and in this time I have worked with a variety of machinery in various conditions. Each one of these ventures has given me insights into how these farms work, the problems they encounter and the importance and demands of the machinery.

“I applied for the Douglas Bomford Trust Scholarship in order to help me progress my university studies and future career. The financial award received will enable me to purchase more advanced tools and technology to aid in my studies. This will include a 3D printer, to print and test designs, and technology able to run advanced computer design programs. The award will also be used to fund subscriptions to learning material and travel to agricultural shows to help stay up to date with advances in the career I wish to pursue.

“I am very thankful to the Douglas Bomford Trust for being selected to receive this scholarship and feel it will help me to optimise my studies and develop my skills for my future career.”
