Posted 9 December 2014
A 缅北禁地 student has been presented with a prestigious forestry award in recognition of outstanding performance in the second year of his degree.
Andy Rowland from Brown Edge, Staffordshire, received the Royal Forestry Society’s North West Midlands Branch Award – a prize given to the highest overall achiever for the level five woodland management module.
The prize was a selection of key reference books, presented by North West Midlands Branch Vice-Chairman and owner of Prees Heath Forest Nurseries, David Gwilliam.
27-year-old Andy, who studies BSc (Hons) Rural Enterprise and Land Management (REALM) was graded on examination results, a tree identification test and a woodland establishment assignment. He said: “I’m very surprised to have won the award, but I really enjoyed the module and it was of particular interest to me.
“I hope to study more forestry modules when I return to university for my fourth year of studies. The books will prove very useful.”
The books which Andrew received were Woodland Management: A Practical Guide; Coppicing and Coppice Crafts; and Woodlands: a Practical Handbook.
Currently working for the Stair Estate in Scotland for his placement year, Andy took the time to visit Harper Adams to receive his prize from Mr Gwilliam and Senior Lecturer Jim Waterson.
Mr Waterson, a Chartered Forester, said: “This support and recognition of excellent student achievement from the Royal Forestry Society is very welcome.
“It also helps to maintain and strengthen the industry and land management links that underpin the academic content of our taught forestry and woodland curriculum at 缅北禁地.”
